Dear Diary,

Today I’m going to talk about something a bit random with StarCraft II. But now that I think about it, all this time that I’ve been playing, I don’t think I’ve even mentioned the box and all its cool contents. It’s surely something I should talk about. There are some really neat things in there that defer from the usual “CD + CDKey + Mini Guide + Product Booklet” norm. Well it’s basically the same, but in my opinion, more badass.

Ok,warcraft 3 patches, well let’s take a look. When you open the box, yes you get your Starcraft II CD and the Key on it. But it’s what’s behind that fascinates me. Boy have they upgraded those guest passes. Take a look at the picture of an old World of Warcraft guest pass that I had (Feel free to take the code, warcraft 3 patches, it’s unused, warcraft 3 patches, if you want to find me, I’m Noyou on Detheroc US Server, warcraft 3 patches, Horde). Now look at the next guest pass ( several on the top part). What a change! From flimsy poster board to straight up hard cardboard copies that are twice the size. Twice the graphics and twice the ownage, those are some pretty sweet guest passes.

I was also amazed at the new unexpected addition in the box. This time, in replacement of not having a Blizzard product manual (I have way too many haha), there was a picture of Jim Raynor. I was wondering what that was, until I picked it up to notice it was a notepad. Yup,warcraft 3 patches, you now get a notepad with Jim Raynor’s face on every page, courtesy of Blizzard and your $60. Starcraft II surely rocks. I guess Blizzard finally said it was time to upgrade the box, and they sure did a good job of it too.

Sincerely,warcraft 3 patches,
Jeffery Kuo (Ninja)

David Perry, warcraft 3 campaigns, founder of Shiny Entertainment, has managed to get World of Warcraft up and running on Apple’s iPad using cloud-based browser-binded streaming service, Gaikai.

Gaikai stores a game’s entire contents on a remote computer that then streams the game, in this case World of Warcraft, to a specialized web browser capable of receiving streamed games. That means if Gaikai gets approved for the App Store, which it doesn’t look likely, you would be able to play whichever games they stream without any software installed. This will allow much larger games to be played on the iPad and not take up any storage space on your iPad at all.

It is highly unlikely that Apple will allow a program of this sort to be released on the App Store for obvious reasons, the biggest being that the Apple would only make money off the sale of the Gaikai application, not from the software they will offer. But I wouldn’t take this to mean that we will never get software like this on the iPhone and iPad, it’s just not going to come from any other developer other than Apple themselves.

Working From Home As An Indie

Now that I’m officially a full-time indie game developer, for the first time in my life I am working from home full-time on games. Many of my game developer friends have also started working full-time from home in the past few months, partly because of all the game studios shutting down in our city recently. Working from home has its own set of unique challenges that aren’t initially obvious. Today’s entry is a list of tips I use to be as productive as I can while striking a good work-life balance.

The biggest complaint I hear (and face) from working full-time at home is the fact your “always on”. Unlike trudging off to work for 8-12 hours per day where there is a definite line between work and home, the line is blurred. This list is mainly ways I go about emulating that distinct line between working and relaxing.

Kill Switch

The best way I can shift my mind from work to relaxation is what I call a “kill switch”. Some activity that completely resets your brain, clears out everything you’ve been thinking about and lets you get into the relaxation zone (rather than the work “zone”). For me this kill switch is Company of Heroes (CoH). As soon as I finish for the day, I have a game of CoH and everything I was thinking about is blocked out. I put 100% of my concentration into playing the game and come out the other end with a clear head ready to relax for the evening. For other people this kill switch comes in the form of WoW. After a hard day they sit and relax, focussing their mind on Azeroth to help forget the stresses of the day.

Whatever the game or activity the important purpose is to put a barrier between work and “not work”. Many people already have this activity they perform, but don’t consciously do it at the end of the day to form a barrier. It becomes a routine and lets your brain form the habit of switching off after the activity is complete.

As game developers, the bonus of this kill switch being a game is that it forces me to actually play a game (even if it’s just one). One of the most noticeable differences in my life since becoming a game developer is that I play a lot less games. I believe it’s vital for game developers to play games to keep a view on the gaming landscape as it changes from year to year. It’s also important to see our craft from the other side, as a gamer.

Working Area

The second important way of differentiating my time is having a separate area that is used only for work. In the current age, this can be quite difficult as often the computer is the centre of both work and entertainment. By keeping my working area separate from everything else at home there is a definitive area that is my work station. I pretend like I’m “heading to the office” when I walk over to my desk and when I’m here, it’s all business.

I find my iPad is a great way for me to be connected while not “working”. Rather than sitting at my computer surfing the web or sending personal emails, I’ll sit on the couch with my iPad on my lap.

Laptops are also perfect ways of physically relocating to be outside of my work area. If I need a computer for something personal, I’ll take my laptop and sit on the couch. It may seem silly, but this small difference is enough for me to not feel like I’m working.

Set Standard Hours

This is an easy one. I’ve found a lot of Indie friends begin working sporadic hours when they start working from home. While its great fun to stay up until 3am getting that last task finished I’ve found it has a detrimental effect in the long run. I like to get 10 hours of work into a day and so I set myself a start and end time. I begin work around 6am and finish at 4pm. I’ll set my status to “do not disturb” and I’ll work through as solidly as I can. One important key is that if something comes up that interrupts me, I don’t count that time towards my day. So if something takes my attention for an hour, then I at it to the end of the day and finish at 5pm. After a few days of working 6am-7pm I quickly realised the importance of cutting out interruptions.

Whether you want to be as strict as that or not, the key is keeping consistent working hours that are sustainable for a long period. Software development is a marathon, not a sprint and it’s important to schedule your day to fit this. If you find you’re burning out after a few days or weeks then look at adjusting your work hours to better fit the long-haul.

Write Everything Down

“Getting Things Done” is a great book that I’ve spoken about countless times in the past. I recommend it for everyone, particularly those working from home. It helps you to become more productive and sort your life out. The main key I get from this is that I make lists for everything. As soon as I think of something, particularly if it’s outside of “work hours” I write it down, set a reminder in outlook for the next day and don’t think about it again. If I am laying in bed and something pops into my head I’ll add it to my to-do list and then forget about it.

Email Separation

This is another easy one. I like to make sure I can’t get work emails during non-work time. This is easy when working in an office as when you’re away from your desk you usually can’t access your email. It’s important to set up a similar barrier when working from home, much like the physical workspace. I set up different rules on my iPhone so I don’t get push notifications for work emails. If I’m at my desk working it’ll arrive in my inbox but if I’m out for the evening I won’t be distracted by it. There’s nothing worse than getting an email you need to act upon, or that has bad news in it when you’ve finished working for the day. This is particularly important when working with overseas publishers or customers with emails coming in at all hours.

Conclusion

Do you have any other tips for working from home on indie games? Whether working full-time or part-time at home, how do you go about keeping a good work-life balance?

MagesMages are the most powerful class in the game. Two mages (one for healing, one for damage) would be ideal, but some may opt for only one mage. If you don’t have at least one mage, then Dragon Age is extremely difficult, if not impossible to beat. The Gauntlet in actionAs a corollary to mages are great, enemy mages are incredibly dangerous. Always target and kill them first, ideally from a distance. They are weak enough that they will go down fast if every character focuses on them with arrows and magic. RoguesIf you don’t have a rogue in your party, you will miss a lot of treasure due to your inability to pick locks. It’s not strictly necessary, but it’s something to consider when building your party. Statistical AdvantagesCertain stats benefit certain characters. For a tank, focus on strength and constitution. Mages will want magic, willpower and cunning. Anyone who uses archery or dual wields will love dexterity, and that goes double for Rogues. Many weapons require a certain stat to be able to wield properly, so make sure to take note of that and distribute your numbers accordingly. The characters who join your party all have certain specializations built in. Sten and Oghren are two-handed damage dealers, while Alistair is naturally a tank. Morrigan is a damage dealing mage, while Wynne heals. It’s possible to shift their specializations somewhat and follow other skill trees, but you may find yourself with a weak, watered-down character. Plan AheadDevelop a plan for your character and stick with it. Review each skill tree, and jot down the ones that fit the best with your particularl strategy for that character. For instance, tanks will taunt, while mages will want spells that restore mana or unleash healing for the entire party. If you’re aware of these abilities, you are less apt to make poor choices when building up.Have a plan for your character and write down the skills you want to develop ahead of time Balanced PartyTry to build a balanced party. Three warriors with the same abilities don’t really complement each other and will have a tough time in battle. Ideally, every party will have a healing mage, two damage dealers (DPS, or damage per second) and a tank to keep the bad guys busy while everyone else attacks. PersuasionPersuasion is incredibly useful. With a high enough cunning stat, and enough talent points in Coercion, you can avoid many fights and help yourself out a great deal. As an early example, enough cunning and persuasion will actually convince the brigands in Lothering to pay you, rather than the other other way around. Collect RecipesTry to get recipes for things like lyium and health poultices early. You can find the lyrium recipe in the mage tower, and all the flasks you need from your camp vendor. Simply purchasing the curatives you need will get expensive fast. Battle StrategiesIf an enemy’s name is white, they are weak and susceptible to things like being frozen and shattered. If their name is yellow, they are a ranked leader, and much more resistant to various spells and abilities. Alphas are the strongest of the darkspawn mooks, and should be focused upon last. As a general rule, target the guys with the white names first.Exceptions to the target the weaker guys first rule: Golems, Drakes, Dragons and Ogres are insanely dangerous, and will decimate your party if left alone. If you can’t freeze them or keep them occupied with a tank, then focus fire on them to get them out of the way. When fighting a horde, learn to lock down the strongest enemy characters. There are a variety of ways to do that Abilities Pommel Strike, Riposte and Dirty Fighting and spells like Winter’s Grasp, Cone of Cold and Force Field all work very well. Without a powerful Alpha (or even a boss) in your hair, you’re free to take down the lesser bad guys. Lure Small GroupsIf you can, always try to lure small groups of foes at you so that you can pick them off. If you rush at a bad guy, there’s an excellent chance that many more enemies will appear all around you, battlefield 2 cd key, and that you will die. Harrassing bad guys and luring them in, or aggro, ensures that you won’t flanked, which is the worst possible situation in Dragon Age.Occasionally, two groups of enemies will suddenly appear and rush from either side. At that point, find a wall or a corner as fast as posssible so that they can’t attack from behind. This will enable you to direct spells and melee attacks much better, and keep them from overwhelming you. This is particularly important when facing rogues and assassins, both of whom are capable of dealing massive damage by sneaking up behind your characters and backstabbing them. Area of Effect SpellsArea of Effect (AoE) spells like Blizzard, Inferno, Cone of Cold and Fireball are your best friends. Fireball will knock everyone down and set them on fire, and deals devastating damage to archers in the rear (which are quite annoying in the later portions of the game). Blizzard freezes a massive group of bad guys and keeps them off-balance for a long period of time. Inferno does the same, but with fire. The power of Cone of ColdCone of Cold is the best of them though. It will freeze any enemy (even the Archdemon!) for a period of time, and it makes unranked bad guys susceptible to being shattered with powerful attacks like Punisher and Assault or spells like Stone Fist. It can also be used to constantly lock down a powerful boss, allowing your characters to hammer on them while they can’t move, or to focus on other bad guys. Best of all, it’s recharge time is extremely quick! One spell tree that isn’t quite as helpful are the earth-based spells. Most foes resist Earthquake, and spells like Rock Armor only help the caster. Stone Fist is a good spell to have, but you’re much better off focusing on fire and ice. Besides, Wynne who will probably be your main healing mage starts off with Stone Fist.If you don’t have reliable AoE spells, then it can be beneficial to set up a gauntlet. Even without specific archery abilities, focus firing on bad guys as they approach using bows and normal attacks can severely injure or even kill them on approach. If you have Cone of Cold, try to set it up so the bad guy will be filled with arrows as they approach, then frozen and possibly shattered when they get too close. Obviously, it doesn’t work if you’re suddenly surrounded, but if you see a large crowd of bad guys at a distance, it’s best to try and snipe them down first. Quest OrderIn general, you’re free to do the main quests in which you recruit the armies in any order you’d like. However, world of warcraft 3, leave Orzammar for last or second to last. It’s not only incredibly long, it features two of the toughest boss battles in the game. In fact, the final boss battle in Orzammar is even tougher than the final battle with the Archdemon, even with good spells and abilities to back you up.Related Article:

One other positive thing in Aion is the combat system it proves very accessible and offers you the ability you need to perform some varied attacks on enemies, and the animation is flawless too. However, battleforge tips, once you’ve reached double figures for your player level things do start turning dull pretty quickly. Gaming documentary, The Hax Life, shows the intensive training and meticulous skill of Korea’s top gamers.

After watching this clip I don’t feel as bad losing all those Starcraft matches. I’m lucky if I can use the mouse and keyboard simultaneously, let alone at rapid fire speed.

The Hax Life documentary further demonstrates that competitive gaming can be just as much of a sport as many official sports. I’m not saying I’d watch people play World of Warcraft every Monday night, but I do think they should get recognized for their skills on a higher level than is currently displayed.
